Buru Buru is a hybrid mobile game blending Tamagotchi-style pet care with engaging puzzle mechanics. Featuring characters inspired by Japanese illustrator JINCO, we focused on preserving the unique artistic style while creating an intuitive, seamless UI. Players nurture their pets through daily interactions and solve puzzles to unlock new features, delivering a cohesive and delightful experience across platforms.

First-Time User Experience (FTUE) Flow Design for Player Engagement

I designed a comprehensive FTUE flow that guides new players through their initial interaction with the game. This flow introduces users to the core game mechanics by seamlessly integrating narrative and gameplay elements: players launch the game, meet their virtual pet, and are prompted by the pet to engage in a puzzle mini-game to earn food rewards.

The FTUE screens were crafted to establish an emotional connection with the pet character while clearly communicating objectives and interactive elements.

My design focused on intuitive onboarding, smooth transitions, and visual storytelling to maximize player retention and encourage early engagement with key gameplay features.

This flow serves as a foundation for positive first impressions, reducing friction and enhancing overall user satisfaction. You can you this place to talk a little bit about the image on the side.

Enhanced Consistency and User Experience

In this project, I was tasked with addressing the inconsistency across event popup screens within a live game environment. The existing UI suffered from fragmented design elements and varied styles, as previous contributions lacked adherence to a cohesive design system. I conducted a thorough audit of all popup screens, identifying inconsistencies in layout, typography, color usage, and interaction patterns.

I developed and implemented a standardized design framework for event popups that established clear visual hierarchy, consistent spacing, and unified interaction behaviors. This approach not only improved aesthetic harmony across the game but also enhanced usability by creating predictable and intuitive user flows. The redesign contributed to a more polished and professional in-game experience, reinforcing brand identity and increasing player engagement.

Game Assets & Environments

I crafted modular game environments and wearable clothes for the pets, creating original vectored illustrations to ensure all new visual elements harmonized perfectly with the established JINCO-inspired aesthetic that a seamless and engaging player experience.

  1. 1. Research, 2. Sketch, 3. Bring the art to life

My role involved designing game environments, marketing materials, and UI assets that faithfully aligned with JINCO’s distinctive style while resonating with a primarily Japanese audience through the subtle, imperfect beauty of “wabi sabi”.

I enjoyed immersing myself in the original artwork to create visuals that balanced authenticity with emotional warmth, ensuring a seamless and culturally meaningful player experience. With BuruBuru’s unique, JINCO-inspired art style as our foundation, I crafted immersive game environments and wearable clothes for the pets alongside cohesive marketing and UI assets. I enjoyed diving deep into the original illustrations to ensure all new visual elements harmonized perfectly with the established aesthetic, creating a seamless and engaging player experience.
